Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service prosecuted the Parliament Square hotel after it ignored prohibition notice banning it from blocking an escape route with rubbish and wheelie bins. Marks and Spencer plc and two of its contractors have been convicted for putting members of the public, staff and construction workers at risk of exposure to asbestos-containing materials during the refurbishment of two stores. High street retailer and two contractors found guilty of safety failings.

Seven in hospital after Lambeth tower block blaze

Seven people have been taken to hospital after a fire at high-rise block of flats in south London. Emergency crews were sent to Salamanca Place, Lambeth, when the blaze started in the early hours. Firefighters used a ladder to rescue nine people from the 17-storey building and a further 10 people were led to safety
